Ranchi traffic police will declare parking of any vehicle in the 50-metre radius of all traffic signals as illegal.

To decongest vehicular movement and reduce bloodspill, the department had recently requested IIM-Ranchi to conduct a survey of 10 capital roundabouts and find out reasons behind traffic snarls which frustrates drivers, leading to aggressive driving and fatal mishaps.

The B-school carried out its study in Lalpur Chowk, Dangra Toli, Kanta Toli, Sujata Chowk, Birsa Chowk, Ratu Road Chowk, Pisca More, Main Market, Booty More and Jail More. In all these places, controlling traffic and ensuring smooth vehicular movement is a Herculean task for traffic personnel.

IIM-Ranchi, which submitted its report submitted to the department last week, identified parking of auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers near signals as the prime cause for traffic congestion near roundabouts, creating a chain of snarls on approach roads from all sides.

The IIM-R report also said the number of auto-rickshaws in Ranchi was four times higher than required. The report further added the obvious — Ranchi lags behind other capital cities in effective traffic control.

Ranchi police have already requested deputy commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey to issue a notification declaring the area in and around signal posts as no-parking zones.

“In the past one month, we have taken several steps to upgrade the traffic system in Ranchi. As most of the auto-rickshaws remain stationed near signals to pick and drop passengers, it creates chaos. We will soon hold a meeting with Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and asked them to set up designated auto stands,” superintendent of police (traffic) Rajiv Ranjan Singh said.

Of the around 9,950 autos running in the RMC area, only 2,200 autos had road permits, the SP (traffic) admitted.

Once the notification is issued, violators will be asked to cough up Rs 540, Singh added. “We won’t be lenient as parking of vehicles affects free flow of traffic,” the SP (traffic) added. A senior official of the traffic department, however, made a startling revelation.

According to him, not just autos, but the RMC-run buses also contribute heavily to traffic chaos.
