A couple weeks back I was trying to find free MIDI filessimply to try out a couple different plugins and see how they worked.

Needless to say, it took me a lot longer than expected sincemany of the sites I found either wanted me to register, pay, or jump throughloads of other hoops in order to download just a single MIDI file.

This is why I took some time to research the best websitesthat allowed me to download MIDI files completely for free.

Now, so that you don’t have to go through the same ordeal asme, here’s a list of the best websites where you can download free MIDI filesand loops.

BitMidi.com

BitMidi is probably the best-known website to download FreeMIDI files.

They have loads of songs in a wide range of genres; Fromelectronic all the way to classic.

If you’re looking for the themes of any Nintendo game likeMario, or for songs like bohemian rhapsody, Africa by Toto, the themes ofalmost any movie or TV Show, BitMidi has got you covered.

35 free drum loops is a collection of loops aimed at hip hop, pop, and rock music and is provided in both WAV and MIDI versions for more flexibility. We know it’s a long time since the last FLSM freebie, but with this release, we just started a new series of sample packs, tutorials and project files. Using Instant Drum Patterns. All of the Instant Drum Patterns from Five Pin Press, 200 Instant Drum Patterns, 260 Instant Drum Patterns and Instant Rap Drum Patterns are in Standard MIDI Files format. They require a software or hardware sequencer that can read Standard MIDI Files. The patterns use General MIDI percussion note mapping.

MidiWorld is very similar to BitMidi in the sense that youdon’t need to register in order to download the files and they don’t put alimit on the number of files you can download.

The Website looks a bit old, but it works just fine.

The only downside is that you can’t play the files beforeyou download them.

Now, MidiWorld has mostly classical and Jazz MIDI filesavailable which are all from the public domain, meaning that none of thosefiles have copyright.

However, this means that these files tend to be pretty old.

Still, it’s a fantastic resource which you should definitelycheck out.

FreeMidi.org

This website offers over 25.000 MIDI files…

And since most of them were created for commercial material(Video games, commercials, etc.), this means that you won’t be able to find thefiles available on this website almost anywhere else.

You can download both the MIDI and the MP3 file, which isconverted directly from the MIDI, as well as play it directly from theirwebsite to find out how it sounds.

It even has a “Request MIDI File” rection where you canrequest a file that’s not already on the website.

Carlo’s Midi

Carlos is the man behind this website and he creates all theMIDI files himself.

He even goes as far as to let you request files and he willtry to make it for you.

You will be surprised by the huge number of free MIDI fileson his website, especially considering that it’s just a single person creatingthem.

Just like BitMidi and FreeMidi.org, you can play the filedirectly on the website to see how you like it.

The downloads are completely free and you don’t need toregister or anything.

Partners in Rhyme

Partners in Rhyme offers a huge collection of royalty freeMIDI files and also music loops.

These are some of the highest quality files -that are free-that you can find.

You will be able to download loads of files of almost anygenre like; classical, reggae, techno, folk, rock, pop, film soundtracks, TVShow themes, and more.

They also offer some premium downloads which actually docost quite a bit, but the free stuff is pretty damn good.

Note: They retain all the copyright to the files; so,don’t resell them and don’t post them anywhere else for download.

This website offers a total of 460 different drum patternswhich you can download for absolutely free.

They all come in a single download file.

This is a good solution to electronic drumming for people whodon’t know too much about percussion.

Midi drum patterns pdf

GrooveMonkee offers a couple free loops from professionalMIDI packs which include a wide range of genres.

There’s also a selection of free MIDI bass loops by AlexEvans that also have matching drums, which you can also download for completelyfree!

The only downside here is that you need to register in orderto be able to download the files…

Nonstop2k.com

Nonstop2k.com focuses primarily on electronic dance musicMIDI files.

It offers over 11.000 free downloadable files as well asloads of premium ones.

If you’re looking specifically for electric dance musicrelated files like House, Trance, Electro, Dubstep, and other similar genres,then you might want to give this website a try.

Now, while the files are free and you don’t need to registerin order to download them, there’s a limit on how many you can download perday.

  • No registration: 2 files per day.
  • Registered: 5 Files per day.
  • Premiumaccount: Unlimited.

They also offer other premium MIDI files, and in order toget those you need to purchase credits.

Note: If you have a premium account you can download premiumones 50 per month.

If you’re looking for purely heavy-metal style MIDI files,then this is definitely the website for you.

It offers loads of free songs from artists such as Megadeth,Metallica, Pantera, Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, and more.

Prosonic-Studios

Here you will find loads of free MIDI drum loops that soundpretty damn good.

You can even download the MP3 version to have a listenbefore downloading the actual MIDI file, and there’s a section where peopleshowcase the music they created using these loops.

You can also buy the premium Blues & Rock-n-roll librarythey sell which contains about 52.000 loops, at the price of $25.

I personally haven’t tried the premium version, but the freestuff is definitely worth checking out!

Yes, this website is completely in Russian, but you can usechrome’s built-in translation tool and you should be able to use the websitejust fine.

It doesn’t require you to create an account or anything,just download the files and that’s it!

You’ll need a MIDI Controller

In order to be able to use these plugins properly, you will need some sort of MIDI Controller.

While you can use your mouse to map the MIDI in your DAW, it’s a lot faster and easier to do it with a keyboard/controller.

My recommendation here is for you to get something like the M-Audio Oxygen 25 MK IV MIDI Controller which you can find at Amazon at a very affordable price, plus it comes with some extra software like Pro Tools First.
